Myths of Mobile Learning: #1- "It is about studying anywhere."

M-learning is much more than just the location. While it is true students now carry their PCs in their pocket and it is extremely convenient, Mobile Learning is much more than location. We should not think M-Learning is about giving language students the opportunity to download a PDF anywhere they want or accessing a web portal on their mobile device. It is more than that. Studying or teaching English as a Second Language classes can be better and can be improved. It is about giving your ESL students:

  • downloadable content - digital content that can be downloaded, updated and shared is the key to M-Learning. The device should not matter. The platform should not matter. What should matter is that the content is digital and updatable.
  • personalize learning - giving students the opportunity to take notes, record lectures, create digital content that can be used again and again on their mobile device for their job, children or just for their own enjoyment. Never have students had so much choice for how they want to learn.
  • an active learning environment with project-based learning or “flipping the classroom” where students teach the teacher is used much more often in M-Learning schools.
  • contextualize the content - now students can experience the situation in various forms inside and outside the classroom either virtually or through a real-life experience.
"You can study anywhere" is one of the key features that attracts students and English teachers to Mobile Learning. But it is more than that.
